  • A funded wallet on your phone (Trust Wallet, Rainbow, Phantom, Coinbase Wallet or an exchange app all work).
  • Enough of the coin you plan to pay in to cover the total plus a small buffer for network fees.
  • The network you are sending on, clearly identified (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Polygon, Tron and Base are the common ones).
  • A stable internet connection for the ninety seconds after you press Pay.

Which coin should you actually use?

There are hundreds of coins in circulation and most of them are not appropriate for paying a hotel bill. In practice, three families of assets cover almost every real-world booking.

Stablecoins (USDC, USDT)

This is the boring, correct answer for most travelers. A stablecoin is pegged one-to-one with the US dollar, so the price you agree to at checkout is the price you actually pay. There is no risk that a five-minute network confirmation turns a $600 room into a $640 room. Send on a low-fee network like Base, Solana or Polygon and the transaction cost is measured in cents.

Bitcoin (BTC)

Bitcoin is still the most widely accepted coin and the one your parents have heard of. It is a good choice for larger stays where the fee, denominated in dollars, is negligible against the room rate. The one thing to know: Bitcoin confirmations can take ten to thirty minutes if the network is busy, so build in a buffer.

Ethereum (ETH) and L2s

Ethereum works, but paying with ETH mainnet during a busy day can cost several dollars in gas. If you want to pay in ETH, use a Layer 2 like Base or Arbitrum. The user experience is nearly identical and fees drop by ninety-nine percent.

The ninety-second walkthrough

Assume you have found a hotel, picked your dates and clicked Pay with crypto. Here is exactly what happens next.

Second 0 to 15: choose your coin and network

The checkout will show you a list of accepted coins and, for each one, the networks you can pay on. Pick the pair that matches your wallet. If you hold USDC on Base, choose USDC on Base. Do not send USDC on Ethereum to a Base address, or the funds will be lost.

Second 15 to 45: scan and send

The checkout displays a payment address, a QR code and a quoted amount that is locked for a short window, usually ten to fifteen minutes. Open your wallet, scan the QR code, verify the amount, and send.

Second 45 to 90: watch the confirmation

The checkout will show a live status: pending, seen, confirmed. On stablecoin L2s and Solana, confirmation typically arrives in under thirty seconds. On Bitcoin it takes longer, but you do not have to sit at the screen. Your booking is held the moment the network sees the transaction.

What can go wrong (and how to avoid it)

In hundreds of thousands of crypto hotel payments, the same handful of mistakes come up. All are avoidable.

  • **Wrong network.** Always match the network shown on the invoice to the network your wallet is sending from. Every wallet lets you pick.
  • **Underpayment due to fees.** Some exchanges deduct the network fee from the amount you send, so a $500 payment arrives as $498. Send from a self-custody wallet, or add a small buffer.
  • **Waiting past the quote window.** Prices update every few minutes. If you sit on the checkout for twenty minutes and then send, the invoice may have expired and refunded automatically.
  • **Copy-paste errors.** Always scan the QR code rather than typing an address by hand.
If you are ever unsure, cancel the invoice and start again. A ten-second reset beats a lost transaction.

What about refunds and cancellations?

Refunds work exactly like any other hotel refund, with one wrinkle. Because crypto prices move, refunds are typically issued in the same coin you paid with. If you paid in BTC and Bitcoin has moved five percent by the time you cancel, your refund will be worth five percent more or less in dollar terms. This is why stablecoins are the safest choice for anyone who is refund-sensitive.

Is it really faster than a credit card?

For the click-to-confirmation cycle, yes, in most cases. A credit card has to talk to your bank, the merchant's bank, the card network and often an anti-fraud vendor. A stablecoin payment is one on-chain transaction. Where crypto has historically felt slower is in the setup, and that setup is now a one-time cost.
